Reader Response :: What it takes to be American

In Chapter 13, Valentino and other immigrant "Lost Boys" go to an Atlanta Hawks game and see Manute Bol play. Afterwards, Bol gives a speech to the Sudanese group. He tells them to be "model immigrants" and that if they conducted themselves with "dignity, restraint, and ambition" in their new home, they would be accepted by Americans (169).

Do you think Bol gave them good advice? Are there other qualities that you think are more important?

What does being a "model immigrant" mean, exactly? Do you strive to be a "model immigrant" or a "model citizen"?

I am one of those model citizens but it suprises me to think that "model citizens" are still in this country we call America, but Mary is one of those " model citizens" that we all should know and love.

I think that is very very good advice , not only for their survival in the US,but for the survival of their families, friends and country. The US is a relativly crowed place and if the lost boys wanted to help themselves and their family they will have to proved that they belong here. That they realize that they have been given an extraordinary oppertunity and should not take it for granted. That what it means to be an American. To be hard working, well behaved and to live your life. If they can do that and work together they will be more the accepted in america, they will be loved and refered to as some ones Amercian brother or sister .

Bol’s advice was alright, but people in this world think what they want to no matter how well you conduct yourself. The Lost Boys still needed to conduct themselves with "dignity, restraint, and ambition" just because that is a proper way to live. They’ll be accepted by some and shunned by others, but that shouldn’t stop them from starting over and living the new lives that they wanted, otherwise they left their old homes and families for nothing.
