Well, I think that first the bombing of his village was one of the worst attacks. When they bombed Marial Bal, where no members of the SPLA were, the only people that were being hit were the innocent men, women, and children. After the bombimg thirty people were killed and the majority of them were men who were playing soccer, not even worrying about the Arabs or Rebels. But then, the final attack on Marial Bal, the that caused Achak to leave was also horrible. In that attack, the men were instantly killed, and the women and children were capture and we later find out that they were taken to work for the captors, on their land, with their cattle! I think that these two offenses were the most heartless yet, just because of the degree and the prolonged effect of them.
I think the most cruel event that Valentino witnessed was the time when the girls had to be tied up and then dragged behind the horses. They were also shot before and or beaten up. Another one that i thought was also uncivilized was the time when he came home and noticed that the wells had been contaminated with the dead bodies.
During the war. and in the moment of him and the Lost boys traveling, I think some of the most cruel things Valentino saw was when some of the boys in his line were aten by lions. Also, the hardships of seeing the people aroung him fasding, were cruel expectations as well. For example, seeing people starve to deaf, staying humble when in pain. i can't even imagine myself being in that type of situation, but from my point of veiw it's not a good mood to be surrounded by. Moreover, this war was very devastating because, Valentino's basically witness his family, his home, his village, and himself, drift away as thew war carried on. In reasoning, its just like your whole past isn't meaniful and is nothing but a blur...but now it's is time for Valentino to rebuild, and develop a whole new life, but eventhough he's on a brand new voyage, he will never for get the essence of his beginning.
I agree with what India and Julie postered. But all they posted were just things that happened in any war .I thought what was most cruel, was when valentino was walking and right before me met up with the group of boys like him, He saw someone talking to a pilot and was trying to convince the pilot to fly a family away. The pilot did not. I think that is cruelist thing so far. I mean the Arabs and Dinkas are in war. So I am not surprised by all the killings and rape. But as a human being when you see something like that natrual humane emotions will consume you and make you feel sorry. Wanting to help that family that the Pilot left behind. That was just inhumane and selfish.I think there was no good reason why the pilot did not help.
Tinuke's comment about the "inhumane and selfish" Pilot made me think a lot about how I (and other Americans who haven't personally had contact with war) can read about events like this and do nothing. We are all horrified by Valentino's story, but in our daily lives we don't do much to change his situation.
Do we have any ideas about how we could try and change things in a place like Sudan, or support people like Valentino in the United States, while still living as students and teachers?
(Later in the book, you will be meeting many people who DO make a big difference in the life of Valentino.)
The most cruel event in my opinion is when the girls were tied up and then dragged by the horses. Another horrible and inhumane event is when the boys were lined up and the lions would eat them. It must have been a truly horrile experience not only for the boy next in line but for the other boys that would hear the screams and anticipate their death.
The most cruel event in my opinion that Valentino witnessed was when the girls were tied up to the horses and drug behind them. Also when Valentino saw his to twin girl friends being abducted and they were put on separate horses and the two twin sisters were reaching out to each other to grab each others hands. I think that was sad because they weren't put together.
