In Chapter 20, Valentino hears several songs that were composed for the "occasion" of a massacre. Find the lyrics of these songs in the book, and then pick one stanza (paragraph) from the book to read closely. Type the lyrics into your comment, then answer the following questions:
- what are the literal images or people in the song?
- what are the figurative images in the song?
- what's the purpose of this song? do you think it's effective?

Chairman John Garang
Chairman John Garang
A chairman as brave as the buffalo,
the lion,
and the tiger
In the land of Sudan
How would Sudan be liberated if not
by the might power we possess?
The immense power the Chairman possess.
Look at the Sudan!
It resembles the ruins of th Dark Ages.
The literal images or people in the song, to me show's how in there home's past time or present have had powerful leaders/chairmen, but the power of the chairman still hasn't stop their homeland from the triumphs and tradgedies they have faced. Also, the purpose of this song, is like their personal anthems represnting their country and history that lies behind it.
We will struggle to liberate the land of Sudan
We will! With the AK-47
The battalions of the Red Army will come
We'll come
Armed with guns in the left hend
and pens in the right hand
To liberate the home,oh,ooo!
The literal images I got from this verse is the refugees getting organized forming and army ready to fight for there country .The figurative meaning of this verse is pretty straight foward its saying there going to take back there land by any any means nessescary by resorting to violence wich the gun stands for or with the power of word wich the pen stands for. I really think this poem is effective the boy who composed this is very talented and i would like to meet him one day.
