In Chapter 13, we hear about the many different Americans who have helped Valentino and other Lost Boys get settled in the United States. However, these relationships are not always free of problems, nor are they always helpful.
Choose one American who has helped Valentino, and explain what good they did -- and also what they were unable to do for him, what they failed at. Do you think they did enough? Do you think you could do the same (or more, or less) if given the chance?

Phil Mays have helped Valentino with the applications for college, the rent, and setting up a banking account. Phil aslo arranged driving lessons for Valentino and cosigned on a car loan. The whole family also helped him and Anchor Anchor on their diets and expalined how the thermastat woked, how to write a check, pay the bills and told Valentino how to ride the bus. Eventually Phil cosigned the Toyota that he was driving. I think that Phil did do the best he could and everything he could to help Valentino. I think that I would also do the same as Phil if given the chance.
Mary Willaims,in my opinion, did alot for the Lost Boys and Valentino. Mary is the founder of The Lost Boys Foundation and she was one of the first people they knew. Her foundation was designed to help the Lost Boys adjust to life in Atlanta. She also was a volunteer and did not get paid. That makes her a generous and helpful person. When Valentino was sick she called Jane Fonda and Jane got him to a doctor. Mary introduced Phil to Valentino. She contributed alot for Valentino. I believe that Mary has done as much as she could for them and if I was given the chance I would do the same thing. It does not matter how much is done it matters that someone took the effort to do it.

Everything you have said is true. I challenge someone to identify a place where you feel like the "helpers" weren't effective, or reached the limits of how they could help.
What about the fact that Mary Williams eventually quits helping the Lost Boys? What about how Phil only sponsors Valentino, and not Achor Achor? Why did these people reach their limits?
I agree with kayla, Mary Willaims did do alot for valentino and the lost boys. She did very thing she could. whether it was doctor visits, material needs, and educational needs. She did verything in her power and gave the lost boy her best .But what she failed to do was to let them know she could only help them so much . It seems that the boys kept coming back for help and did not think to help themselves when they could. She failed to teach the about the very first rule about the US.In the US their is help but you have to be willing to help yorself and not rely on others. Its sad to say this but some of them took avantage of her and because of that Mary willaim was no longer able to help them at all and the boys behind them, who were praying for an oppertunity like theirs.
From this chapter, i truly think that Ms. Mary Willaims helped Valentino and the Lost Boys the most throughout their voyage in America. Due to the fact that she's the founder of the Lost Boys Foundation, she was the first person they knew. In reasoning, Mary Williams was the one who got them settled here, see new things, and enjoy the lifestyle as an American. For example, she helped provide these young boys with the experience of an average American boy, such as going to the NBA basketball games, meet celebrities, and just enjoying life. Mary also was also like a nurturer/momma, because when Valentio was ill she did everything in her power to to get him well, even if she had to call her famous mother. Eventhough, she wasn't able to give the opportunity of letting the boys into college, she was still there for them through thick and thin, and would have taken the shirt off her back if she needed. Mary Williams was truly a generous, ,loving woman.
