Response Question: Help from the UNHCR

In his time at the Kakuma refugee camp, Valentino hears and thinks different things about the UNHCR -- United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. This is the group that is running the camp and providing food; they are still running camps today for refugees from Sudan (as well as other operations around the world.)

Consider the policies and procedures at Kakuma when Valentino is there. Then read about the UNHCR's program to bring the Sudanese back to their homeland:

What do you think about the UNHCR? Are they effective? Give specific examples about why you think the Sudanese refugees are better or worse off with the help of the UN.

i think that the UNHCR did do the best that they could to provided food and shelter. Considering that fact that there were about thousands of refugees in the camp, you must remember that providing food for that many people cost a lot of money. Their help was essential to the Sudanese because without them, there
will be no way of living. Their efforts to help the people was effective because they created homes, schools, jobs, and a heath system.

I agree with Julie on this one. I think the UNHCR is providing and doing the best they can do in giving food, and shelter, and helping the refugees in what they need. Yes I think the UNHCR program is very effective because the program is providing the refugees with food, building schools, giving jobs, giving them health care, building homes for them. They did so much for the refugees. The refugees are better off with the help of the UNHCR program because without them they probably wouldn't have had all the things they received. Even though it cost the UNHCR a lot of money to provide for the refugees they did it any way and they still are.

I agree with what was already stated. No matter how much the Sudanese complained, which they did, a lot, they could’ve never accomplished what they did without the help of the UN. The Sudanese People complained that they didn’t have enough food, but without the UN, they would’ve been like the SPLA, eating each other. It would’ve been even more difficult to starts schools and obtain an education. There would be very few houses and definitely none of the special programs and activities that Valentino and Noriyaki were involved with. So yes, maybe the UN could’ve did more, but what they did is what helped the Sudanese people hold onto some security and most importantly life.

I agree with all.Life at the camps might have been bad,but at least they are alive. Even though the sudanese complained , i believe that deep inside ,they are grateful. They know that without the UNHCR, how horrible they might be, most of them will be dead without them. If the UNHCR would suddenly decide to end the foundation that will be the end of all of them . Particularly the unacompained miners, who have no one. When people are in need they do not consontrate on the help they are getting, they tend to consontrate on the need. That is exactly the the sudanese people are doingt .

I truly think that the UNHCR did do their best in providing food and shelter for the refugees. Eventhough, providing this sort of support, for like thousands of people, did cost the UNHCR a bundle of money , but im guessing they allowed their budget to provide for them, because if you have a heart, you know that deep inside, that it's the only right thing to do. So yes, the Sudanese refugees are better off with the UN, because they're really a major support. For example they are very effective, because without their help, they would know the opportunity of getting educations, getting jobs, having health care, and yet having holmes. Although there were some tough times in the camps, the Sudanese people, know and felt that this was the best for them, b/c at least they got the taste of having a home again. I also wanted to state that I thinks it's real good that the UNHCR are still providing for people today.

I really did not care for UNHCR was effective or not what really matters is that they did there best trying to support thousands of refugees also in more then just giving them nourishment and when it all comes down to it it does not matter how effective it was what matter is that is when people were in need UNHCR help them the best they can.
