Response Question: the SPLA (137-256)

While walking to Ethiopia, Valentino and the other Lost Boys see and hear about the SPLA, or Sudan People's Liberation Army. There is much interest in the army, and pressure for the boys to join them. What are some reasons the boys want to join, and what are some of the reasons Dut discourages them from joining?

There are many reasons the boys want to join the SPLA. They want to join so they will be able to eat. They also want to defend their home lands. Dut thinks the boys are just to young but the soildiers they meet think the boys are ready yo fight. The boys wanted to be able to feel that sense of protection.

There are many reasons the Lost Boys wanted to join the SPLA. First of all, they wanted to join so they can have shelter, food, and they wanted to protect their home lands, their people, and families. Dut did not want the boys to join because he simply thinks they are to young, not strong enough, and he thinks they are not ready for the SPLA.

The boys wanted to join the SPLA because, for the frist time since the war reached their home land or villages , the boys did not feel weak and helpless. The SPLA gave them hope and strength, and so alot of them wanted to join beacuse they wanted to assosiate themselves with that kind of hope and power. Alot of other students like kayla, commented that the boys wanted to join the SPLA for food. I think that is true ,but i think they hunger for power, the strength ,and the chance to defend themselves and their families more than they hungered for ELEPHANT MEAT!
