Response Question: "this stupid country" (256-367)

When Valentino finds out what happened to Tabitha in Chapter 21, his sponsor Bobby has a very intense reaction:

...many times during that drive he banged his steering wheel and yelled, and ran his hands through his hair.

"Maybe it's this stupid country," he said. "Maybe we just make people crazy."

Valentino does not directly reply to this comment. What do you think his opinion is? What are some of the ways that living the U.S. might make former Lost Boys & Girls "crazy"? For all that they escaped, what cultural differences and challenges might make things insane for them?

I thoink that Valentino agrees to this comment but doesn't say anyhitng. Though in his mind, he thinks that he is the cause of all the pain and suffering that's happened to him thus far. He also believes that she is crazy for letting Duluma into the appartment because she didn't take the threats seriously. I think that Valentino blames himself alittle bit also, even thiugh he doesn't say it. I believes this because it was a strange thing that happened when he called Duluma and they became friends? Then after the phone call, Tabitha was killed. In some sort of way, i think that he blames himself.
some ways that i think the boys and girls might go crazy over is the culture and the soceity that we live in. Our American life stlye and their life style is very different. The fact that we have chairs for everyone to occupy is a great gift and to us it seems like nothing, but to Valentino at least, it is a luxury. also the fact that women have rights and the ability to do as they please might upset the men and make them inferior to the women.

I agree with Julie I also think Valentino agrees with this comment but doesn't say anything. He thinks every thing is his fault. And Valentino thinks this to.I think the lost girls and boys might go crazy by the way we live. The United States is very different from their homes. They have rights to do what they please and laws to protect them.

The US is not heaven. It makes "me" crazy from time to time.It makes evreyone a little, even those who were born here.I beleive that valentino agrees with Bobby and is just in shock from the news to answer.Of course the challenges in sudan was harder than the challenges in the US but, these man are tired. Truly tired .The are frustrated ,because they didnot think that the US will be the way it is .The over estimated The US. That frustration met with helpnessless and cause so of them to lose it .It is amazing that all of them are still sane. What they went through was not just physical but mental tutuer. But that is still no excuse for what Duluma did.I think tabitha had foolish pride and was not eve.For if she was she would have called the police.

I don’t think that Valentino looked at the U.S. as something negative, he felt that he had done some bad in his past that god was punishing him for. But how could he respond, the love of his life, for many years, had just been violently killed, and it was something that he felt he could’ve prevented if he was mad aware of it. Of course he realizes that there were not killing of wives by husbands in Sudan, but he doesn’t blame this on the U.S. A lot of the friends and that support that he has are because of his American Friends. But things are a little more complicated in America than in Africa. Were their lives were hard ours are complex and that was something he wasn’t used to.
